The Ghetto Shul
Mission: “The Ghetto Shul fuses contemporary culture and traditional spirituality for young Jews in Montreal.”
Torah: Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach once taught: the ingredients for Friday night are the ingredients for vibrant Jewish life- the challah-bread must be the freshest, representing contemporary culture, and the wine must be the oldest, representing traditional spirituality.
History: Ghetto Shul has serviced thousands of students and young professionals from ages 18-40 over the last eight years in downtown Montreal- including nine couples who met at GS and have gotten married! Our new location at 3458 du Parc shatters paradigms- it is basically an upper-scale bar/music venue/lounge with a prayer space on the second floor/mezzanine. We have already hosted (among other exciting events) four nights of Montreal Jazz-Fest music this past summer and many packed Shabboses.
Future:Our plan is to become even more of a hotspot for Jews to meet and “do Jewish” in so many different ways, from Shabbat to music to art to food. There is simply nowhere else for young Jews to go downtown in Montreal that offers a real “fresh yet spiritual” scene. As a newly independent organization, we desperately need YOUR help to make the Ghetto Shul a viable institution for our youth, the next generation is counting on YOU!
