Named for the Student Ghetto east of the McGill campus that it calls home, the Ghetto Shul is a grass-roots student-run synagogue acting as a stronghold of Judaism for the downtown Montreal community. Striving to offer Jewish experiences accessible by Jews from every walk of life, our services generate an atmosphere of warmth and community found in few other places in North America. With events ranging from Friday-night services full of song and dance to organized learning opportunities to holiday celebrations and Klezmer jam sessions, the Ghetto Shul capitalizes on the wide range of young Jewish life and creates memories, friends and a community for any Jew living in, studying in, or simply visiting downtown Montreal.
History
The Ghetto Shul was founded back in 2000 by a few students who saw the true need for a spiritual outlet downtown. The student population especially had few Jewish resources that were uniquely accessible to them. Tawn Freidman, Avi Poupko, and a few others sought to fill this hole in their personal Jewish experiences, and in doing so, enriched the Jewish experiences of so many others.
The Ghetto Shul was originally located in an apartment on Lorne Avenue in the Student Ghetto, conveniently located just next to the McGill campus.
The Ghetto Shul is excited to have moved to a new, awesome location, at 3458 Avenue du Parc (just south of Milton, in the McGill ghetto). The space is fabulous and we look forward to filling it with many events and many happy occasions.
Dena & Leibish
Leibish Hundert became the spiritual leader of the Ghetto Shul after Avi Puopko and later married Dena. Together, they are the guiding strength and the backbone of our community.
